Kangunu Farmers’ co-operative society limited was registered by the commissioner for cooperative development just over 21 years ago. The society has one factory currently with 1,700 active members.

The factory is receiving assistance from one of partners at origin, Dormans’ Coffee Management Services (CMS). Their long term goal is to increase coffee production through farmer training, input access, Good Agricultural Practice seminars, and a sustainable farming handbook updated and distributed annually.

CMS aims to establish a transparent, trust based relationship with the smallholder farmers, helping to support long-term industry growth in Kenya, and premium prices to farmers, and premium quality for coffee drinkers.

Farmers have access to pre-financing, easing cashflow to cover school fees and farm inputs. The factory manager is re-trained every year, and field days are held to connect government and experts with farmers.

Batian varietal

Batian is the latest variety to be developed in Kenya, it is named after the peak of Mount Kenya

Ruiru 11 varietal

Released in 1985, Ruiru 11 is a disease resistant varietal developed in Kenya

SL28 varietal

SL28 was developed in 1931 by Scott Laboratories to suit the growing conditions in Kenya. The varietal is known for its exceptional cup quality

The location

The Kirinyaga region of Kenya

This region is located east of Nyeri, and has similarly rich volcanic soils and a high percentage of smallholder producers.

Farm processes

Washed process

Machines are used to remove the flesh from the coffee cherry before being fermented in water, washed again, and finally sun dried. This process tends to result in more distinct, cleaner flavours.
