We’ve just opened Sample Coffee Marrickville

TL;DR: We’ve just opened Sample Coffee Marrickville! A “futuristic” micro espresso bar next to our (soon to be) coffee roastery.

Soft opening hours:
Monday to Friday – 6 AM to 2 PM
Saturday – 7 AM to 3 PM

Address:
37 Sydenham Road Marrickville 2044 (Google Maps)

Last Friday, we quietly opened the doors of our newest shop, Sample Coffee Marrickville. It’s a small (but powerful!) retail space attached to what will be the home of our future roastery.

Context

As some of you may know already, we need to move the roastery out of St Peters due to the Precinct 75 redevelopment works. But not the Pro Shop! Our St Peters cafe is staying alive and open for the foreseeable future!

Earlier this year, we secured the building at 37 Sydenham Road, Marrickville, and have since been steadily working on the relocation. It’s now all ‘go’ except for one last, essential factor: gas! Which we absolutely need to fire up and roast with our Loring Kestrel S35.

Unfortunately, we don’t know when the connection will happen. But we were so keen (and ready) to be in the buzzing Sydenham Road, so we decided to open the espresso bar first, and do the roastery later. (Hopefully not too long!)

The location

It’s 50 metres from Sydenham Station, steps away from the western Metro gates. You don’t even have to change footpaths: tap out, walk 30 seconds, and boom! We’re there.

Local tip 1: parking is quite scarce, except for some ‘kiss-and-ride’ spots. If you’re keen to visit, the best move is to walk, cycle, or metro/train here.

Local tip 2: watch out for mindless e-bike riders on this footpath; there are plenty. Take care of yourselves.

The space

It embraces the local industrial character, street art culture, and brewery/taproom scene. It’s relaxed, playful, pragmatic, and focused on what really matters to us: sharing delicious coffee.

The espresso bar/retail shop occupies the existing shopfront room of the previous business – a swimwear manufacturing company. It’s tiny, and we kept it that way.

The few additions: a floating solid timber bar counter, a rear work station, some retail shelves, and a cozy window bench. Plus, a “futuristic” [sic.] coffee setup.

The coffee setup

This is where most thoughts (and budget 😅) have gone. Our coffee setup features some of the latest tech gadgets in the coffee-making industry – which has developed and improved a lot in the last few years:

  • Eversys Cameo + Latte Art Factory (milk coffees)
  • Modbar Espresso + Modbar Pour over (single origin)
  • Six Simple Machines Freepour Batch (batch filter, cold brew, special/seasonal drinks)
  • Ditting + Mahlkönig (grinders)

Soft opening hours

We’ll be spending the first few weeks polishing our systems and getting to know the locals’ habits and wishes. Until further notice, these are our opening hours:

Monday to Friday – 6 AM to 2 PM
Saturday – 7 AM to 3 PM
Sunday – Closed

Thanks for the warm welcome!

It’s only been open 3 days, but the reception and energy have been unreal. Can’t wait to fully settle here.

If you haven’t visited yet, please come say hi and explore this exciting part of town.
