Packaging disposal

In 2023 we’re rolling out our new bags (made of plant-based materials) as the current stock of soft plastic finishes. If your bag has a ā™»ļø logo on the back, it’s soft plastic. If it says “home-compostable” on the side ā€“Ā guess what? It’s compostable (and awaiting the Australasian Bioplastics Association Home Compostable Verification Scheme certification).

Here’s the low-down on how to correctly dispose of the bags and the different elements that come in/with them:

  • 2023 bags:
compostable (pending ABA Home Compostable Verification)
Compostable collection bin (if existing/accepted by your local system), otherwise general waste.

  • Former bags:
    recyclable
Dedicated soft plastics recycling bin, otherwise general waste.

  • Coffee bag labels
    Labels:
    recyclable
Yellow recycling bin, otherwise general waste.

  • Coffee beans degassing valve
    Valve (only in 1kg bags):
    general waste
    General waste bin.

  • Used coffee grounds
    Coffee grounds:
    home-compostable
Home-compost, FOGO or grounds recycling scheme. Otherwise, general waste.

Detailed disposal information and facts ā†˜ļøŽ

2023 bags (compostable)
Supplier: Ecobarista

The bag canvas’ material is AS5810 compliant and approved by the ABA (Australasian Bioplastics Association) Home Compostable Verification Scheme. The finished bag itself is pending that same certificationā€”the supplier is in the process of obtaining it. (Even if the original materials are certified, the assembled product needs to undergo its own certification in order to claim it. The message on the bag side states “home-compostable” in preparation for the ABA logo to be included above once received and in relation to the bag’s core materials.)

Please check whether your council’s collection system accepts this type of waste (this is a good website where you can do it!. Requirements vary between councils and will probably evolve quickly within the next few months. If none of these are available to you, please dispose of them in the general waste bin.

We’ll update this section and our communications as soon as we receive news regarding the certification status.

Former bags (recyclable soft plastic)
Supplier: Ecobarista

Our former-design bags (rolled out in 2019) are made of 100% recyclable soft plastic. This is stated on the rear of the bag, which shows the recycling symbol.

Whenever possible, place the empty bags in dedicated soft plastic recycling bins. If this is unavailable to you, place them in the general waste bin.

They will be in circulation until the existing batch runs out. That’s when we’ll move on to the new home-compostable bags for the full bag rangeā€”we expect this to happen in ~October 2023.

Labels
Supplier: Avery
Printing: in-house with a FUJIFILM Business Innovation printer

Our bag labels are “Made from 100% recycled paper and utilising water soluble eco-friendly adhesive. These labels are also FSCĀ® certified.” According to the supplier’s disposal instructions, they are recyclable (after several enquires, they couldn’t clarify whether the “water soluble eco-friendly adhesive” can be home-composted or industrially composted).

These labels are printed in-house, on demand for each roasting batch. According to the printer provider, the ink is “non-toxic but not vegetable based. The toner contains polyester.”

For the correct disposal, please tear the label off the bag and place it in the yellow recycling bin. But please note most processing stations don’t pick up small bits of paper, so the best approach is to stick them inside another paper bag/box or form a ball together with other recyclable paper waste. If this is not available, it should go in the general waste bin.

Our goal is to find a solution that doesn’t involve tearing the label off, so the whole bag + label can go into a home-compostable bin.

Valve (only in 1kg bags and over)
Supplier: Ecobarista

This small squared piece is made of non-recyclable material, as advised by our supplier. It allows for the evacuation of excess CO2 released by the beans after roasting, and it’s only needed in our larger bags (1kg and over).

Please remove it from the bag and dispose of it in the general waste bin.

Note: we’re waiting on the supplier to find a home-compostable material for these valves.

Coffee grounds
Supplier: Sample Coffee

Coffee grounds are organic matter. Please compost at home, place in the Food Organic and Garden Organic (FOGO) bin or recycle. If none of these are available to you, please dispose of them in the general waste bin.
