Coffee atlas: Antigua in Guatemala

Antigua is a region defined by rich volcanic soil, low rainfall and lots of sunshine. It is situated in the shadow of Fuego, one of Guatemala’s three active volcanoes

Altitude: 1300–1600 m above sea level

Varietals: Bourbon, Caturra, Catuai, Typica, Maragogype, Pache & Pacamara

The rich volcanic soil in the region plays a key role in the development of coffee. The soil naturally locks in moisture and counteracts the low levels of humidity and rainfall in the area. The region is represented by the Antiguan Growers Association, which helps protect the regional integrity of the coffee grown there. In the past, growers from all over the country had shipped coffee to Antigua for processing in order to get the name of ‘Antiguan’ coffee
