Hola,
One of our latest staff hires is a true coffee head.
While most of the ‘senior’ team here at Sample is keen to spend their time outside work with family, sports, or other crafts, young J is excited to attend every coffee cupping and gathering possible, week after week.
Whether it’s their excitable early age or a deep, fresh love for coffee and people—or both—it seems fitting that they’ve taken the initiative to start the Slurps Up Sydney coffee community. It’s an offshoot from the original Slurps Up Melbourne, and the goal is to organise all sorts of IRL coffee tasting and socialising opportunities.
Their next event is a Coffee Trivia Night hosted at our St Peters Pro Shop next Friday, 19 September at 6pm (RSVP required).
We know most of you won’t be able to join because tickets are almost gone, you live too far to come, or (like many of the old industry dawgs) nighttime coffee events make you feel queasy. But J has inspired us to prepare a short online coffee trivia quiz (only 5 questions, no signup required) for y'all here to play whenever: samplecoffee.com.au/coffee-trivia
Come on, brew yourself a cup, manifest your 19-year-old or coffee-beginner spirit, and get involved. Like in the IRL version, there’s a little treat waiting for those who do.
😉
Find our usual monthly updates and more just below. Thanks for reading (and playing along), as always, and see you next month! The team at Sample
PS. It’s been a while since our last IRL event here at the Pro Shop! The header image is from the latest: Hey Barista! magazine launch party, in November 2023.
News & things
Neighbourly collab → St Peters neighbours Future Brewing have made an ‘Edgy AF’ Imperial Breakfast Stout beer with our Sweet Tooth espresso blend.
We’re going to SCAJ → That’s right, we’re going to see what’s on Japan’s specialty coffee industry. Got any coffee, food, bars, and sightseeing recommendations for Tokyo? Please share!
Online coffee trivia → A short, sweet and online version of the upcoming Slurps Up Sydney Coffee Trivia Night. Give it a go, and perhaps learn something new.
Pro Shop coffee trivia → Get tickets (if there are any left) for the Slurps Up Sydney gathering at the Pro Shop next Friday, 19 September.
Strictly coffee
I’ll be back → That’s Marco Fidel Rodriguez, from Colombia, every year (because we love his coffee). This time with a washed Pink Bourbon that feels like yellow peach, mango, and jelly bean.
The key to success → Is Kii, a classic Kenyan profile we’ve been featuring for many years as well. Grand acidity, medium body, flavours of orange, raisin, and Ribena. A dream for those who enjoy bright and fizzy African origins.
Decaf, not vanilla → Our washed + EA Natural decaf is enjoyed by those who need less caffeine and more excitement in their coffee life. Works with milk or as black.

“How do you classify your omni roasts? Light? Medium?”
That’s a great and fair question, as we have historically avoided defining our roasts as light/medium/dark.
The reason for that is that they’re quite subjective and broad terms: what someone may find light, it may be medium for others… But we agree that sometimes, it’s helpful to have a baseline or point of reference.
Some of our staff have recently used the Agtron to measure our single origins roasts, and they generally sit around the ~70-60 value range.
So, technically, our single origin coffees are somewhere in the lighter side of the medium spectrum—if that makes sense!
