Dionel Chilito

Dionel comes from a coffee-producing family, and like many other farmers, he got his start when his father gave him a small piece of land to plant 2,000 Caturra trees. In this Gesha lot we taste peach, panela and strawberry

Very Special

Gesha is one of those varietals that carries a lot of weight in the specialty coffee world. Derived from Ethiopian landrace varietals in the 1930s, it was collected by the British and distributed all around the world to grow in many diverse conditions. It’s a low yielding plant, so it is naturally more scarce than its relatives. But what is harvested of the Gesha plant offers delicious, complex floral and fruit flavours

La Pradera farm

Dionel Chilito Lopez owns a 10-hectare farm called La Pradera, where he has 3 hectares planted with coffee. Dionel comes from a coffee-producing family, and like many other farmers, he got his start when his father gave him a small piece of land to plant 2,000 Caturra trees. These days he has replaced his Caturra with Gesha trees, with very positive results!

Variety Select program

Variety Select lots, of which Dionel’s coffee is a part of, consist of coffees from a single notable variety. They are sourced either from an individual farm or blended from several farms. These lots aim to showcase the unique flavor potential of specific coffee varieties, reflecting the producer’s dedication and meticulous attention to detail. With microlot-level quality, these coffees also offer a high degree of traceability.

Huila region

Located in southwestern Colombia, Huila is nestled in-between the Central and Eastern ranges of the Andes, with the middle area called the Magdalena Valley. The variation in elevation results in Huila being one of the country’s most unique and complex regions of coffee production. Its terroir, climate, and harvest cycles all contribute to the quality of coffee produced here. The most impressive quality behind the coffees coming out of Huila lies in the people producing them. While Huila accounts for nearly 20% of the country’s production, 80% of coffee producers operate on less than three hectares.

Varietals

Gesha varietal

An exceptionally high quality variety that has grown in popularity, Gesha is named after the town of Gesha in Ethiopia where the seeds originated.

The location

Coffee from Colombia

Colombia is one of the largest coffee producers in the world and benefits greatly from having one of the most unique and complex set of micro-climates of all coffee producing nations.

The Huila region of Colombia

This region boasts the perfect combination of high quality soil and geography and is quickly becoming one of the largest coffee producing regions in Colombia. One of the best regarded regions for high quality, fruit driven coffee.

Farm processes

Washed process

Machines are used to remove the flesh from the coffee cherry before being fermented in water, washed again, and finally sun dried. This process tends to result in more distinct, cleaner flavours.
